A growth scan in pregnancy, likewise known as the third trimester scan, is performed in the last trimester between 28 and 32 weeks of gestation. Weight of the baby, blood flow from mother to fetus, amniotic fluid level and evolving anomalies if any are assessed in this scan. Frequency of growth scan might increase if the fetal growth is not adequate for the period of gestation.

Estimated fetal weight is plotted in population based growth chart to assess the interval growth. If there is a drop in growth parameters. Repeat scan is performed within 2-3 weeks. Fetal doppler results are analysed and the sequence of doppler changes are assessed in the subsequent scans. If there is deterioration of blood flow to the fetus, delivery of the baby is planned after discussing with neonatologist.

In the setting of evolving anomalies detected in late gestation, consultation with the concerned specialist is recommended. For example, consultation with neurosurgeon if fetal ventriculomegaly is detected.

In addition to the growth, liquor and doppler, fetal movements, presentation of the fetus (head down or up position) are observed.

What does the scan reveal about the growth of your baby?

The measurements taken during the growth scan or the fetal well-being scan assist with revealing abnormalities in the baby's size. This guides in identifying babies who are either not developing well or are becoming larger than expected. Thus, there are 3 types of results:

  1. Baby has an average sized head and abdomen: If these measurements compare to the findings through the clinical assessment by the doctor, the baby is more likely to grow as expected.
  2. The measurements of the baby fall short of what is expected at that particular gestation, it might reveal that the child's development is inadequate. In such situations a detailed assessment of the baby's well-being with a biophysical scan and doppler ultrasound will be offered. The growth and well-being of the baby will be monitored with ultrasound scans at regular intervals.
  3. Baby's size is bigger than expected, it might show high blood sugar levels in the mother, either because of obesity or because of gestational diabetes.
